Are you ready for Cinco De Mayo? It’s hard to believe, but April is almost over and the annual celebration of Mexican culture and cuisine is only a week away.
To get you in the Cinco De Mayo mood, we crafted four cocktails, all packing heat from Rogue Spirits Chipotle Whiskey. Nothing represents the flavors of Mexico like a drink with a peppery kick.
Double down on the spice with Rogue’s Chipotle Ale.
Directions: Muddle 3 slices of jalapeño in empty shaker, add Chipotle Whiskey, lime juice and simple syrup to shaker with ice. Shake and strain into pint glass with ice. Gently add Chipotle Ale, stir and garnish with jalapeño slice.
Blood Orange Whiskey Margarita
Margaritas are traditional on Cinco De Mayo. We made our version tequila-free for all the whiskey lovers out there.
Directions: Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice, shake and strain into cocktail glass. Garnish with orange rind. Optional garnish: salt on rim.
Cinco De Mayo – Born In The USA
Often mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day, Cinco De Mayo commemorates the Battle of Puebla which took place on May 5, 1862. A small group of Mexican soldiers defeated a much larger and better equipped force of invading French soldiers sent by Napoleon III. The victory has come to symbolize Mexican pride.
The festival of Cinco De Mayo was born a year later in California. The Battle of Puebla slowed, but didn’t stop the French invasion. Mexicans living in California created the holiday to support the besieged government of Mexican President Benito Juarez and the Mexican army. As it spread to other Mexican communities in the US, it evolved into the cultural festival we know today. Cinco De Mayo is more widely celebrated in the US than it is in Mexico.
Spicy Whiskey Sour
Three ingredients and ice, as simple as it gets.
Directions: Combine all ingredients in shaker with ice and shake and pour over glass with ice.
Chipotle Hot Chocolate
We saved dessert for last.
Directions: Combine Chipotle Whiskey, Chocolate Liquor, Hazelnut Liquor, in a rocks glass, stir lightly and top off with a splash of soda or water.
Rogue Chipotle Whiskey begins in the dirt at Rogue Farms in Independence, Oregon, where we plant, grow and harvest our jalapeño peppers. We then make the short drive to our distillery in Newport, where they are cold smoked over cherry and alder wood. This turns our farm fresh jalapeños into the sweet, smoky, and spicy chipotle peppers we use 3 ways in our Chipotle Whiskey. Rogue Chipotle Whiskey is brewed, distilled, and barrel-aged with our chipotle peppers for three times the flavor – and a touch more heat.
