One Nut, One Rum, Two Cocktails

March is Hazelnut Appreciation Month, and today we’re bringing forth a couple of our favorite hazelnut cocktails, both made with Rogue Spirits Hazelnut Spice Rum.

Why hazelnuts? Rogue Farms of Independence is in the heart of Oregon’s hazelnut country. Virtually all of the US crop is grown within a short drive from the farm. To source the hazelnuts we use to craft Hazelnut Spice Rum, all we have to do is walk over to our next door neighbors where they have a 98-acre orchard.

The Filbert Cocktail

Filbert is the old-school word for hazelnut. Not many people outside of Oregon use it anymore, but we still hear it a lot around the farm. This cocktail uses both our Hazelnut Nut Spice Rum and Rogue Ales Hazelnut Brown Nectar to double down on the nutty filbert flavor.

Instructions:

Combine Hazelnut Spice Rum, sugar and ice in a shaker. Muddle ingredients. Add a splash of Rogue Root Beer, shake, then pour into a pint glass. Add Hazelnut Brown Nectar, and top off with cream and a dash of cinnamon.

The Buena Vista Ferry

If you ever visit Rogue Farms, we highly recommend taking the scenic route via the Buena Vista Ferry.

For 160 years, the ferry has shuttled people, cars, trucks, farmers and crops across the Willamette River. Ferries were common on the river until better roads and bridges put most of them out of business. But the Buena Vista Ferry hung in there, partly because it made no sense to put a bridge in the middle of nowhere, and partly because people love the ride. This cocktail is dedicated to slowing down and taking your time.

Instructions:

In a coffee mug, stir the coffee and sugar until dissolved. Stir in Hazelnut Spice Rum. Let settle. Top with whipped cream. Shave small amount of orange zest. Add a dash or two of cinnamon.

The hazelnut trees in the Kirk’s orchards are budding. A new generation of filberts is on the way. The nuts will begin growing this summer and be ready for harvesting by the fall.

But you don’t have to wait that long to appreciate the hazelnut. Rogue Spirits Hazelnut Spice Rum, with its unique grown, roasted and distilled in Oregon flavor, is available year round.
