Rarely do people think of blueberries and booze. For whatever reason, there aren’t many well known blueberry cocktails. At Rogue Spirits, we think it’s time for a change.
Maybe that’s because Oregon is one of the top blueberry growing states in the US. During summer, whether we’re in the grocery store, or browsing a farmer’s market, we can’t help but notice those delicious blue pearls.
This also happens to be the 99th Anniversary of the blueberry. Blueberries have grown in the wild for a lot longer than that, but it was 99 years ago this month that a couple of clever folks in New Jersey figured out how to grow a commercial blueberry crop. That’s something we think is worth celebrating.
Blueberry cocktails are simple to make, and easy to enjoy. Here are some of our favorites.
1 tablespoon brown sugar
3/4 oz. fresh-squeezed lemon juice
2 oz. Rogue Spirits Hazelnut Spice Rum
Cover the bottom of an old-fashioned glass, or mason jar, with blueberries. If you’re using a smaller glass, add a second layer. Then add the lemon juice and brown sugar. Muddle until the sugar is dissolved. Try to break the skin of the berries to release the juice, but not so much that they turn into pulp. Add crushed ice, rum, ginger ale and stir.
The Ol’ Blue Eyes
12 blueberries (defrosted if using frozen berries)
4 tablespoons Rogue Spirits Spruce Gin
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
6 tablespoons ginger ale
Put the blueberries, gin and lemon juice in a bowl. Muddle everything together, or give it a quick run through a blender. Strain the mixture into a glass filled with ice cubes. Top with the ginger ale and stir. Garnish with mint leaves and blueberries.
Blue Skies Above The Clouds
Fill a glass with ice cubes. Add vodka and garnish with blueberries. Add splash of soda and garnish with more blueberries. Stir.
