Watching our 100 acres of Risk™ malting barley – we can finally relax a bit. Temperatures at the Rogue Barley Farm are warming up. Nighttime lows are climbing out of the 20’s. With no snow to protect the barley that’s important.

This late in the season, the odds of a barley killing cold spell are almost nothing.

Almost…

Nature has a way of surprising us. As farmers, we’ve learned this the hard way. Think of last year’s floods at the Hopyard, or the two nights of frost in May that killed our cherry crop. It’s one of the risks we take by growing our own ingredients for our malts and spirits.

But there’s always hope. So far we’ve done all the right things. Planted the Risk™ malting barley a little bit earlier in the fall. That gave it a head start before winter kicked in. This could be our finest crop of Risk™ barley ever.

As for the Dare™ spring malting barley we’ve already ordered the seed, and plowed, disced and harrowed the field. When the soil is dry enough, probably by late March, we’ll be ready to start planting. The journey from ground to glass continues.
